Myopia

Commonly known as nearsightedness, it is the most common of the refractive eye conditions. Due to a longer than normal eye or a steeper than normal cornea, light is focused in front of the retina, making objects at a distance appear blurry. Myopia can be mild, moderate, or severe.

Signs of myopia often present themselves in childhood and include squinting to see things at a distance and holding objects close to the face. Myopia is commonly inherited.

Hyperopia

Also called farsightedness, those with hyperopia have the opposite problem of those with myopia—objects that are close up appear more blurry than those far away. This occurs because the cornea's flatter shape or the eye's shorter length causes light to land at a point behind the retina. As with myopia, hyperopia can be mild, moderate, or severe.

While severe hyperopia typically appears in childhood, those who are only mildly farsighted may not notice anything wrong until older, and especially when their eyes become tired when doing an activity such as reading.

Presbyopia is easily diagnosed during an eye exam. Treatments include prescription or over the counter reading glasses, contact lenses (including monovision), refractive surgery including LASIK and CK, and implantable lenses including ReSTOR® and Crystalens®.
