Cataract Surgery

Cataracts can get in the way of enjoying both small and big things in life, from reading a book to seeing your grandchild smile.

Eye Physicians and Surgeons, P.A., can restore your vision with state-of-the-art, no-stitch cataract surgery

Patients in the Wilmington, DE, area turn to Dr. Jeffrey Minkovitz, our experienced surgeon. He performed the first laser-assisted cataract surgery in the state.

What Are Cataracts?

When someone develops a cataract, their eye's lens becomes cloudy and obscures light. The lens helps focus light onto your retina, which then sends the visual information to your brain. A clouded lens can disrupt your eyesight by blocking light from reaching the retina. Your lens can become cloudy over time as a natural result of age, but other major risk factors include medical conditions, smoking, eye injuries, sunlight exposure, and genetic predisposition.
Normal lens and eye with cataract
During cataract surgery, an ophthalmologist accesses the eye's clouded natural lens through a miniscule laser incision. They then  break down the eye's clouded natural lens into small pieces using ultrasonic waves. Once the lens has been removed from the lens capsule, the ophthalmologist will replace it with an intraocular lens (IOL), which helps restore clear vision. Surgery is not painful and typically takes less than 20 minutes per eye.
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, age is the most common cause of cataracts. Patients who are 40 and older are at a higher risk.

If You Have Cataracts, You Are Not Alone

Candidates for Cataract Treatment

During a consultation and eye exam, Dr. Minkovitz can determine whether or not you're a good candidate for cataract removal. We will look at factors such as:

Impact on Quality of Life

Since cataract development can be slow, Dr. Minkovitz may recommend non-surgical options such as wearing stronger sunglasses to reduce light sensitivity and glare before moving on to cataract surgery. If cataracts interfere with your ability to drive, read, distinguish between colors, or complete daily tasks, then you may be a good candidate for the procedure.

Medical History

Certain medical conditions like diabetes can lead to complications during the procedure and affect your ability to heal. We can work alongside your primary care physician to minimize your risk. Controlling your blood sugar, for example, can improve your overall health and ease recovery. We will work with you to find a solution.

Don't Let Cataracts Impact Your Quality of Life Request a Consultation With Dr. Minkovitz Today

You don't have to suffer the negative side effects of cataracts. Dr. Minkovitz can discuss your treatment options, including temporary, non-surgical options or the permanent solution of cataract surgery. As a board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Minkovitz can provide the highest quality eye care with the latest advancements in laser surgery.

Why Choose Our Team For Your Eye Care Needs in Wilmington, DE?

Leaders in the Field

Laser cataract surgery with the LenSx® laser was FDA approved in 2011 and allows more precise blade-free incisions and more accurate and reproducible removal of cataract lens material. Dr. Minkovitz and his partners at the Center for Advanced Surgical Arts were the first to bring this technology to Delaware (one of the first 75 units installed nationwide).

State-of-the-Art Technology

Eye Physicians and Surgeons, P.A. brings several other types of cutting-edge technology to the Wilmington, DE, area at our advanced ophthalmic surgery center, like the Haag-Streit Lenstar LS900® system. We can also refine your results with the YAG laser.

Comprehensive Care

Our team consists of several esteemed doctors like Dr. Minkovitz who specialize in diagnosing and treating different eye conditions to provide a full range of services.

A Range of Premium IOLs

Monofocal artificial lenses, or intraocular lenses (IOLs), provide clear vision at a single distance. Premium lenses, on the other hand, can overcome visual impairments such as astigmatism and allow you to see clearly close-up, at intermediate distances, and far away–without glasses or contacts.

An Award-Winning Team

All of our doctors have been voted one of the Top Doctors in Delaware over the past 20 years in Delaware Today Magazine.

Cataract Surgery Timeline

Cataract surgery is a safe and effective outpatient procedure in which the natural lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) to restore clear vision.

Consultation

Dr. Minkovitz will determine whether you're a good candidate for surgery and recommend non-surgical options, if possible. He will explain the procedure in more detail and answer your questions so you can make an informed decision regarding your treatment.

Local Anesthesia

On the day of the surgery, we provide numbing eye drops to ensure a virtually painless experience. Using the advanced LenSx laser, Dr. Minkovitz will make a tiny, incredibly precise incision to access the lens of the eye.

Cataract Removal

The cloudy portion of your lens will be broken up into several pieces using ultrasound waves during a process called phacoemulsification. The lens is then removed from the eye.

IOL Placement

Next, we will insert the IOL—an artificial lens—where your natural lens used to be. We will carefully choose the lens based on your unique needs and goals.

Begin Recovery

We may ask you to stay for a short time after the procedure before having someone else drive you home. Our bladeless technique and no-stitch method promote seamless healing and a quick, easy recovery.

Insurance Coverage & Financing Options

Medicare and other types of insurance usually cover at least part of the cost of cataract surgery and monofocal IOLs. Premium lenses, however, will incur out-of-pocket costs.

Our practice accepts flexible monthly payment plans through CareCredit®, a company dedicated to financing healthcare expenses. Contact our offices in Wilmington, Newark, or Dover, DE, to learn more about your financing options for cataract surgery.
