WEEKLY EYE OPENER FROM EPS- What is the Difference Between an Ophthalmologist, an Optometrist, and an Optician?

Many people ask, “What is the difference between an ophthalmologist, an optometrist, and an optician?”  One big difference is the level of training each profession must undergo and credentials they earn.  Another is what services each provides as well as what they specifically cannot provide.  The following chart defines and clarifies these differences.

 There is another category within the Ophthalmology profession.  These ophthalmologists are called subspecialists and have undergone 1 or 2 years of additional, in-depth training in specific eye needs.  This training is called a fellowship.  Each of the ophthalmologists at Eye Physicians and Surgeons is also a subspecialist and the following chart defines which subspecialty they have chosen.
