“With privilege comes responsibility” states Dr. Jeffrey B. Minkovitz in his recent article published in The New Castle County Women’s Journal (the 4thQuarter 2015 edition). Dr. Mink (as staff affectionately call him) writes about Laser Vision Correction Surgery and compares the LASIK procedure to ASA procedure.
First of all, laser vision correction surgery improves the visual acuity of those who have myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and/or astigmatism (irregular curvature of the cornea or lens). Most of the patients with these diagnoses who choose surgery no longer need eyeglasses or contact lenses. Can you imagine the freedom that brings? Perhaps for you it would be a dream come true. Laser vision correction surgery corrects how the eye focuses light and this is done by shaping the cornea using a laser on the cornea. It is noteworthy that the majority of complications that arise from LASIK surgery are associated with the corneal flap.
ASA is Advanced Surface Ablation. Now if you are at all like this blogger, you want to know what ablation means. In essence it means removal, so medically/surgically it is the removal of something in your body. In this scenario the ablation takes a small fraction of the surface of the cornea. In certain cases such as a patient with thin corneas, dry eyes, or active lifestyles complications can arise from the corneal flap so the Advanced Surface Ablation is considered the safest procedure as ASA does not involve corneal flaps. Dr. Minkovitz strongly believes this procedure “provides the best balance between safety and convenience for all patients, while providing the absolute best visual results.”
